- Trees
In the lower left side of the photo you can see many living trees. Those on the hill on the right side are all dead, showing that the timberline has moved down an estimated 330 feet in the last 1000 years. Dead trees may remain for thousands of years in the White Mountains due in part to the very cold dry climate.

The mountainside in the background is obscured by a snow shower. Taken on May 26, 2002, a 'warm' day for the time of year. Snow falls durning every month of the year in the White Mountains. However during the winter, snowpacks are very light compared to the nearby Sierra Nevada to the West.

- Foliage
Comparison between the foliage of Pinus longaeva (White Mountains) and of Pinus aristata (Gardnerville, Nevada, cultivation).
Needles of Pinus aristata are slightly longer and tinner than those of Pinus longaeva.
