These trees are growing in a Botanical reserve along Clark road near the town of Bonny Doon, several miles north
of Santa Cruz, in Santa Cruz County, at 1,600 feet elevation. They are growing in association with Pinus attenuata
and Pinus ponderosa on sandstone. The surrounding area contains a dense forest of Sequoia sempervirens and
Pseudotsuga menziesii. There are six small groves of Cupressus abramsiana growing in the Santa Cruz Mountains
between 1,000 and 2,500 feet elevation. This area is at the margins of the summer fog belt, and frost occurs along with
occational snowfall in winter. The foliage of this species is considerable different from the goveniana and pygmaea
species. Wolf considered Santa Cruz Cypress as intermediate between Cupressus goveniana and Cupressus sargentii.
Indeed the foliage of Cupressus abramsiana does appear intermediate between the two species. Cupressus sargentii
grows on serpentine soil in the interior Coast Ranges. Cupressus abramsiana does not grow in serpentine soil,
rather in sandy soils. Serpentine outcrops in the Santa Cruz Mountains have no Cypress tree growing on them.
