Pinus jeffreyi is the dominant forest tree in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Pinus ponderosa in uncommon, usually growing at lower elevations. In the Incline Village area are many Pinus ponderosa, Pinus jeffreyi and Pinus ponderosa x jeffreyi intermediates growing side by side along highway 28. The green foliage of Pinus ponderosa stands out against the bluer foliage of Pinus jeffreyi. Pinus ponderosa can also be easily distinguished by it's immature cones which are green, compared to the purple or brownish cones of Pinus jeffreyi.

In this area you can find an interesting assortment of Pinus ponderosa and Pinus jeffreyi cones and many intermediates. To add to the variety in the area, Pinus washoensis, with its cones that look like miniature Pinus jeffreyi cones, is found about 15 miles away.
