September 2002

During this period, 32 seedlings representing 18 different species of conifers were planted in the various fields of the Arboretum. With a wet soil this period of the year is ideal for planting. Roots will have time to grow further before Winter.

Planting could begin only in January. There was in December two weeks of frost without the temperature going above zero even in daytime (in the shade). More damage in the nursery than in the fields.

May 2001

A quick survey of the trees in the fields showed no damage whatsoever from morning frosts.

April 2001

In April, 101 seedlings representing 14 different species of conifers were planted in the various fields of the Arboretum. The total number of planted trees during the last year is 436. The next task for the coming year will be to reach 2'002 trees growing in the Arboretum. During the third week of April, the temperature went very low for the season, just below 0° C (maybe to −2° C at a higher altitude). No damage were visible in the nursery, but a later survey of the trees in the fields will be necessary, for many trees had already set new leaves (Abies pindrow, Tsuga chinensis, Cedrus libani [the ones from Lebanon are setting new leaves earlier than the other varieties], Abies cilicica, etc.). Fortunately there was no sunlight during the frost hours.

October 2000

Although in August there was almost no rain, all seedlings planted in July in the most exposed sites (shallow soils, southern slope) made it through, confirming that it is possible to plant in the Arboretum at any time of the year (with the exception of a frozen soil in winter).

Seeds of Torreya californica sowed directly in the field (10 seeds for one place, 7 places) germinated successfully.

In October 48 seedlings representing 19 different species were planted in the various fields of the Arboretum, and among them 4 new species.

After a very long Winter, a short survey was conducted to see the consequences of an early deep frost (10°C) and of repeated frosts for 4 months. All Pinus canariensis left outside are dead, as well as all Callitris tasmanica and Fitzroya cupressoides. The Pinus michoacana look very poor, with only a tiny hope of recovery for some seedlings. The Pinus massionana are doing rather well, while the Pinus patula and the Pinus montezumae are fine. A good surprise is the perfect aspect of Cunninghamia lanceolata, Saxegothea conspicua and of all species from Taiwan planted in the Arboretum : Cunninghamia konishii, Calocedrus formosana, Abies kawakamii, Taiwania cryptomeroides.
In the nursery (outside) all Podocarpus henkelii are dead and one Pinus maximartinezii out of 6 is surviving.

3 January 1999

During the last week of 1998, 80 trees were planted in the different Units of the Arboretum.
Here is the list of the species introduced for the first time (* species grown from seeds in the nursery) :

  1. Abies fraseri
  2. Abies gamblei
  3. Callitris tasmanica *
  4. Cephalotaxus harringtonia koreana *
  5. Cryptomeria japonica sinensis *
  6. Cupressocyparis notabilis
  7. Picea gemmata
  8. Picea montigena
  9. Picea smithiana *
  10. Pseudotaxus chienii
  11. Tsuga chinensis
  12. Tsuga diversifolia

Other species planted to complete the collection :

  1. Cupressus dupreziana (4x) - a gift from the INRA Antibes, Mrs Andreoli - France.
  2. Metasequoia glyptostroboides (4x) *
  3. Pinus attenuata (3x) *
  4. Pinus edulis (10x) *
  5. Pinus koraienssis (3x) *
  6. Pinus leucodermis (2x)
  7. Pinus resinosa (3x) *
  8. Sequoia sempervirens (4x)
  9. Sequoiadendron giganteum (2x)
  10. Taxus baccata (6x) - a gift from the Arboretum of Freiburg - Germany.
    ...
During Fall the first serious frost came early (November) and the temperatures went as low as -10°C. Some dammages were observed on Pinus canariensis, Pinus michoacana and one newly planted Keteleeria davidiana. All other species seem to do well (even if it is to early to draw a conclusion), especially Pinus massoniana, Pinus patula, Calocedrus formosana and Cunninghamia konishii.

2 November 1998

During the last week of October, some 63 trees were planted in the different Units of the Arboretum. Here is the list of the species introduced for the first time :

  6. Picea engelmannii mexicana (= P. mexicana)
  7. Pinus jeffreyi *
  8. Pinus lambertiana *
  9. Pinus mugo mughus
  10. Pinus mugo pumilio
  11. Prumnopitys andina (= Podocarpus andinus)
  12. Taxus brevifolia

More and more seedlings are planted that were grown in the nursery of the Arboretum (with the number of seedlings) :

Four different clones of Cupressus dupreziana (the Cypress of the Sahara Desert) - a gift from the INRA Centre d'Antibes in France, Mrs Andreoli - were also planted.

After a rain deficit during the Winter, Spring and Summer 1998, the months of September and October were quite rainy : 105 mm and 86 mm respectively, allowing most of the young trees to recover at the very end of the growing season.
