On the east side of Pico Orizaba, Vera Cruz, growing at 3,927 meters (12,885 feet),
near timberline on a rocky ridgetop called “El Calvario” with Pinus hartwegii.
The area is accessed by a four wheel drive road which leaves from the village of Hidalgo,
Puebla, and crosses over to Vera Cruz.
We arrived to the location at about 7:30 a.m. on May 20, and temperature was below freezing,
with frost on the ground. The tallest bushes are 1.5 meters tall,
with trunk diameters no more that 3 inches.
