- Smaller cone, typical of cultivated specimens in UK, unknown origin but closely matched by herbarium material from the north end of the species' range in Hidalgo & Vera Cruz around 19-21° N - 96-98° W, and probably from that area. The type of the species is also from this area.

- Commonly treated as Pinus ayacahuite var. veitchii (Roezl) Shaw, but its large seed size and thick, woody scales ally it more closely to Pinus strobiformis Engelmann.
